Jazmine Sullivan accepts the Best R&B/Soul female artist and Album of the Year award at BET’s 2021 Soul Train Music Awards in a humbling and transparent way. Her acceptance speech highlights the trials of her journey as an artist.

“For so many years in my life, I felt like having a soulful voice and being a soul artist and R&B artist was almost like a hindrance, but as I got older I realized that it’s my superpower,” she said.

Sullivan takes pride in talking about the pain and the things women go through in her music, which is demonstrated in her latest album, “Heaux Tales.” “I wrote this project for women to love themselves no matter what stage of life that they’re in,” she said.

Despite feeling insecure about her weight, she wants to be an example of what it looks like to love and accept yourself. “I can’t just talk about it, I got to be about it,” she said.

Sullivan was nominated for a total of six Soul Train awards. She shows immense gratitude for winning this year’s Best R&B/Soul Female Artist and Album of The Year award.
